“Day of the Dead Planet” Threats to planet Earth are causing our physical world to change in ways that may become permanent and fatal. What have we already lost? What are we in danger of losing? What connections to the earth matter enough to cause us to change our ways? Memorials, stories and ofrendas about the natural world, in the spirit of Día de los Muertos will be shared by 14 artists, working in a variety of media, who care about the environment. Sixth Annual Dia de los Muertos Exhibit and Celebration, featuring over 40 artists who have created original acrylic, oil and watercolor paintings, assemblage, paper mache, etching, sculpture, mosaic, printmaking and mixed media works on canvas and wood. Plus an altar installation by Letica Castañeda in honor of her recently departed father and brother. The community is welcome to honor those who have passed by adding pictures, notes and other offerings to the altar.

Arroyo Arts Collective presents a Fiber Art Exhibit and Yarn Bombing Event: FIG KNIT-ON. a fiber art experience along North Figueroa, between Avenue 56 and Roselawn Street. A group of artists will magically transform the sidewalk by dressing
everyday items in varying combinations of fiber material. If you’ve ever thought to yourself, “Hey, that parking meter could use a sweater,” or “Wouldn’t knit flowers look good in that empty planting box,” then we have an exhibit for you. Plus a wall display inside the gallery. Works range from funny to functional; some draw on the rich history of Northeast Los Angeles, while others use unusual materials; and all push the knit/crochet envelope. Mary Addison Hackett, “Fluid: Elusive Chapters from the Passage of Time (Volume 1: The Lost Months, Volume 2: Pools and Flowers)“ The earlier body (Vol. I) shifts from the work in her previous exhibition at the gallery by scale and material, from large-scale work on canvas to small-scale on linen. The second "volume" of work shifts more notably from abstraction to representation, containing representations of abandoned swimming pools and bouquets of cut flowers while still retaining a distinctly abstract quality. Adding figurative elements does not negate the abstraction in either body of work, but only expands the breadth of Hackett’s tools in working with the same ideas of language, form and meaning.

A mishmash of Japanese style and 70's bohemian-inspired fashion, Mr. Funky is where Hello Kitty meets cool crochet. Be the first to see her Fall/Holiday Funky crochet animals + super cute accessories. 6-10 p.m.

Sandy de Lissovoy: “We are caught falling” Imagined through a set of objects and their re-presentations in photography and sound, the installation reveals the scene of a magical accident. A nebulous meteorite is caught on one side of an incomplete cube. Snagged in an instant, the amorphous shape unfolds, exposing its structure. It poses the inescapable question: how long can we remain in stasis before the act of falling resumes?

Still-life Compositions: Not the Usual Set-Up, an exhibition of artworks by Kathleen Swaydan. Swaydan’s works incorporate both organic and inorganic materials in complex compositions. Some tend toward the traditional still-life genre, others display levitating objects, which defy gravity and lend a surreal aspect to her drawings. She works primarily in graphite but will also have watercolor paintings on display.

The “non-committal flux space in the 90065” showcases the work of Los Angeles painter Jan Taylor. Created to illicit a response, through the physical nature of a hole and height of the hole, a series of innuendos occur that might demand some physical participation by the viewer. Open at 6.

Outpost for Contemporary Art

T-shirt Revival Night is a silk-screening event that features a new artist every month. In anticipation of the arrival of Outpost's Brazilian artists-in-residence, Grupo Bijari, later in October, and to continue the theme of last June's successful soccer tournament/fundraiser, the Outpost Cup, portraits by Carolyn Castaño of famous South American futbol players, like Brazil's national hero, Pelé, will be featured. Bring a favorite old T-Shirt that needs a little sprucing up or any other item you'd like to have the artist print on. Each print is only $6, or buy two for $10.
